Welcome to Rock Music Critic! Check out reviews in the Flash menu above or the static links below. This latest version of the site now includes reviews with an embedded music player so you can listen to whole albums once for free courtesy of Lala.com. Lala doesn't always have an album, but when they do I will include the player. What's easier than listening to an album to decide whether you like it? Feel free to ignore my petty ramblings and just listen to the tunes. That's really the whole point anyway. Up the Irons!! ~ George

Morgana Lefay
Grand Materia

The triumphant return of Morgana Lefay!!

For several albums they went by the moniker Lefay, but now they are back to using their full name once again. I was a big fan of these guys back in the early and mid 90's. I have their "The Secret Doctrine" through "Maleficium" albums and think they are just wonderful. I lost track of them after that because I had trouble finding their albums.

I really liked these guys because they just sounded so metal. They weren't jumping on the death/black bandwagon of the early-mid nineties, and they didn't (and still don't) sound like the latest wave of power metal. Neither do they sound like dated 80's metal. They just play some really kick ass metal.

Listening to this album actually does remind me of another band. The singer sounds just a wee bit like Warrel Dane from Nevermore/Sanctuary. The difference is that I love Morgana Lefay, and I don't really care for Nevermore. I was a huge fan of Sanctuary back in the day, but for some reason the vocals for Nevermore just never appealed to me. So if you are a huge Nevermore or Sanctuary fan, I don't think you would find it a stretch to get into this band.

I'm glad to say that this new album holds up just fine next to the older material. I wish there were more bands playing this style of metal. Not that I want to see a bunch of useless Morgana Lefay clones diluting the talent pool, but I really love music like this; it totally inspires me and makes me feel my headbanger roots.

So get up off your ass, go out and buy this disc, and support one of metal's great artists.
