| Welcome to Rock Music Critic! Check out reviews in the Flash menu above or the static links below. This latest version of the site now includes reviews with an embedded music player so you can listen to whole albums once for free courtesy of Lala.com. Lala doesn't always have an album, but when they do I will include the player. What's easier than listening to an album to decide whether you like it? Feel free to ignore my petty ramblings and just listen to the tunes. That's really the whole point anyway. Up the Irons!! ~ George |

 | Pissing Razors | | Evolution | | | I've only ever heard bits and pieces of Pissing Razors recorded catalog, this will be my first listen to an entire album. I saw them live at some point, I think it might have been the Cannibal Corpse tour, and while the music was ok, the singer was a real asshole. Apparently they have a new singer now, so I will discard the feeling of annoyance I felt when I saw the new album. The guy really irritated me. But as he is gone I will give this a listen as though they are a completely new band.
A year ago I would have immediately written this band off. Not because of the asshole singer, but because they are from Texas. What's wrong with Texas? Nothing really, except that it's in the US. And while I love my country, I can't stand American music most of the time. Even heavier bands like Pissing Razors seemed like nu metal crap to me and I just wasn't having any of it. Sure there were exceptional American bands like Iced Earth, Manowar, and a handful of death metal bands, but mostly it was just Fear Factory clones gone wrong.
Well, I've opened up a little in the last year and now I will listen a little closer before trashing an American band. So far this CD isn't too bad. The first two tracks were pretty heavy, nothing incredible or innovative, but worthy of a mosh or two. Track 3, "Hanging on the Cross" isn't too bad though. Judging by the sticker on the front of the case I'm guessing this is the "single." Yeah, I'll keep an ear out for it on DC 101, I'm sure I'll hear it any day now (blatant jab at the pathetic American radio stations.)
The harsh vocals are kind of typical, and I think I would like the clean vocals better if there was a bit more power/conviction behind them. I think most of the music could be a little quicker too. Although, the rest of the world seems a little slow after listening to Grimfist for awhile. I'm sure there are people out there who are going to just love this CD. This will not surprise me, this IS competent music, it's not like it's the second coming of Necrophagia or anything awful like that. It just isn't doing a whole lot for me right now.
We have now crossed over into the second half of the CD, and in the kingdom of Pissing Razors mediocrity is king. Being a musician myself I feel absolutely terrible speaking poorly of other people's music, but I like what I like. And this really isn't a bad album, it just doesn't excite me. But who the hell do I think I am anyway!?!
As always, I am merely trying to give you my impression of the album, whether or not it is truly any good is entirely in the ear of the beerholder. I think every person out there needs to decide for themselves whether or not they like a particular album. If you actually decide whether or not you like an album based on what some schmuck on the internet says, you need to get a life. Personally, I almost never listen to movie critics when going to a movie, so, you know, take what I say with a grain of salt.
The last track on the CD is a Spanish rendition of track 4. Nifty. | TRACKLIST:
