Welcome to Rock Music Critic! Check out reviews in the Flash menu above or the static links below. This latest version of the site now includes reviews with an embedded music player so you can listen to whole albums once for free courtesy of Lala.com. Lala doesn't always have an album, but when they do I will include the player. What's easier than listening to an album to decide whether you like it? Feel free to ignore my petty ramblings and just listen to the tunes. That's really the whole point anyway. Up the Irons!! ~ George

Shining Fury
Last Sunrise

Most of what I receive in the mail is death metal and black metal, but once in awhile I get some power metal for a change.

I can't say I think much of the name Shining Fury, sounds kind of, well, dumb. But whatever, there are so many damn metal bands (not to mention non-metal bands) out there that finding an original name can be trying.

I was happy when Hammerfall came on the scene and started making power metal popular again. The power metal of now days is pretty similar to the power metal of days gone by, so it tends to sound somewhat dated with all the happy sounding gang chorus parts.

Another problem is that while many power metal bands have real chops and can play fast and play melodic, they don't have much to say. Many of them sound very similar, and after awhile I get tired of all the pointless wanking (which is why power metal fell out of favor in the first place.) It's like Xeroxed speed Yngwie.

Anyway, as for this particular power metal band and this particular power metal album…eh. It is competent. It is recorded well. But it just sounds so "done before" that nothing really catches my ear and makes me want to hear it again. I'll take it over Britney Spears any day, but there are many other power metal albums I would reach for before this one.
